I get this question a lot. Why write a blog if you are doing so well with affiliate marketing already? I suppose I could devote all my time to affiliate marketing, grind, grind, grind, scream at my AMs for screwing me on payouts, or keep getting new VCCs to start new Adwords accounts and push Google Biz-ops all day, but my name isn’t Ryan Eagle. I just wasn’t built for it.
So why do I still keep a blog? Here are some good reasons
I don’t think I’m the first affiliate who read John Chow or Shoemoney, and thought to make their own blogging/make money online-style blog. Back then I was just a stupid college freshman, trying to take out as little as I could from my student loan for my living expenses. I started off on blogger, failed to make much more than a few cents, moved to WordPress and started a blog called Blogosis. Here I focused on blogging, and god damn I wrote some good, creative shit.
That’s when I moved into freelance writing, started this blog and wrote about that to pick up clients. Eventually I turned to affiliate marketing for my main source of income. I just never dropped off the blogging scene, though. I like blogging. It’s a good break from the monotony of building campaigns all day.
The money from affiliate marketing is nice, but sometimes I just don’t enjoy it as much as I wish I did. Blogging, however, is always fun for me!
I had a lot of help getting into affiliate marketing and pushing through the leagues of many wanna-bes. Blogging gives me a chance to share my ideas, what works, what doesn’t, and what I think about the current state of affiliate marketing. I don’t have anyone close in Thailand I can chat about it on a regular basis, so I just blog it out to whomever passes by here.
Not going to be humble about this one – I love the attention. People came up to me at ASW and shook my hand thanking me for everything I’ve written and how I’ve helped them get active into affiliate marketing so much. I appreciated it all, and I like having a name that is out there somehow. Nobody wants to die a nobody.
Writing this blog has helped me build some strong connections with others that have helped me, or just been a really good friend for me. These connections can equal more money or more fun for me, and blogging also gives me a chance to share whats been going on with my life with my family and friends. My mom loves my blog. Haha.
I make money off this blog (and my marketplace), and while it isn’t as much as I make with affiliate marketing, it is a simple way for me to make enough to cover server costs, my rent, internet, and telephone bills each month. It also diversifies my revenue streams. If one fails, I always have other areas I can make money.
So that’s about it. I know a lot of you like what I do here, and I know I get a lot of people that would like to e-slap me with their e-penis. Whatever, yo. Think what you want to think, but always keep makin’ that money.

Good post, I agree with you it's nice to sometimes just break away and write something that's on your mind or something you've found out.
Obviously if you find a great program/tool and they have an affiliate program it's a win win and helps pay for hosting, domains and other tools you pay for.
One frustration I have is when you start blogging everyone jumps on the "I hate blogs" bandwagon and accusing you of not making money, while that may be the fact about some affiliate/bloggers, it's not all of them obviously.
Personally I rarely update my blog, mostly because I am so busy, but when I originally started it – I did it for a way to express myself and build some connections in the business, which it did help. Although twitter might have been an easier way :p
I just started my own blog because i need to get better at writing. I always hire out to get all my articles, but i feel its something i need to work on now. Thanks for sharing your experience.
i like your blog and really believe in diversifying your income stream aswell – keep writing
