So I was looking over my bank account at US Bank. They’ve been decent to me over the past 7 years I’ve had my money in there. I more or less was forced to bank with them, as my parents opened my first savings account there and they had access to manage all my checks through their accounts at US Bank. It’s a good bank if you live in the States. Lots of branches, helpful phone service (when I called at least) and it was pretty much a no-hassle service for me.
Anyways, back to me looking over my bank statements online today. I was pretty shocked to see they were charging me ridiculous amounts of money just for taking out money through an ATM. We’re talking about 3% here, and that is on top of the $5 the Thai banks charge me for using a foreign ATM card (another giant rip-off, I know). Now 3% isn’t too much if all you need is $20. But I’m withdrawing thousands a month – to pay rent, pay my employees, pay for my hookers and blow entertainment, etc. It can add up to several hundred extra dollars a month their screwing me out of.
A lot of you are probably wondering why I don’t just get a bank account in Thailand. Does paying tax to two different countries sound fun to you? I’m not sure about the rules on that, but just to be safe, I’m keeping my money in the US. I get a tax break for staying out of the US anyways, so it makes more sense to me. Plus, transferring money through PayPal or wires costs extra and take a longer amount of time. My designer, whom I’ve used PayPal to pay, insists I don’t pay him through it because it takes him a week to get the money into his bank account.
So a quick tweet for a no-international fee bank for my checkings came back with a reply to check out Ally. Their website is the shit by the way. Reviews were nice, so I said what the hell and started signing up. It took me 2 minutes to fill in my info. I thought it might take a day or two to approve, or they’d do some dumbass credit history check and ask me questions I don’t know the answers to, but I was instantly approved and have full access to the account.
Just have to wait for my check card and all my monies will be with them. So, to any US Bank reps that read this, I’m willing to let you guys redeem yourself if you’d like to refund all my cash you jacked from me. I’ll gladly continue to use your service if you can match Ally’s terms.
Of course, that probably won’t happen.
And, if you haven’t already seen it… the Ally commercials are sadistically hilarious.

Justin, can you please throw some lights on this US tax break thing. I thought you have to pay US tax if you're an US citizen no matter where you live.
You do. You can get a break of some of the money you make if you are out of the US for more than 11 months of the year. Last year I was only in the US for about 20 days, so I get a decent break on part of the money I made.
Do you know what percentage or what is the dollar limit? Somebody told me it's $80K per year but I could not find any solid info to validate his claim.
Also, you mentioned earlier about monthly hotel rate of 10K bhat near MBK. I could not find any info on the web for 10K bhat hotel or serviced apartment in Bangkok.
Can you please post some hotel or serviced apartment names near MBK for 10K a month.
Google, bro.
But your best bet is to book a hotel the first week or two you are here, and walk around and find a short-stay apartment in that area. Unless you can read a Thai website, you won't have any luck finding what you need.

The limit was raised to 92k+ or so this year.
You only pay 15% on the first 92k or however much it is. Then you pay normal on the rest.(social security tax. After
Just a general suggestion, stay the hell away from Bank Of America. Damn ripoff artists! Example: They charged me $5xx in NSF fees in one night. All over a petty creditor who tried to withdraw an amount THE WRONG NIGHT.
The creditor was notified and apologized. BUT, what does BoA do? "Sorry, its not our problem."
Ungrateful bastards!
Bank of america sucks. Chase used to charge me to make online payments instead of snail mail ($10 a transaction). Isn't ally just GMAC rebranded?
Hey Justin, check out Schwab Checking. They refund 100% of ATM fees anywhere in the world. My "ATM Fee Rebate" is over $30 every month. They allow you to withdraw around ฿35,000 per day from ATMs. They are based in the US so I've never had any problems receiving wires from Neverblue, Copeac, etc.
Good choice, Ally is win!
Check out schwab.com. I have a checking account through them and there are no monthly fees and no fees for ATM's worldwide. They also credit you back if the ATM charges you a fee. Been using them for years.
I applied, but they gave me the run around on my student loan. Wanted me to answer some questions I didn't have the answers to, then told me to mail them my application physically which is just a pain in the ass.
Ally was setup in 5 minutes. Fun.
Let us know how things go with Ally. I still have an account there leftover from when they were GMAC and had 5% checking.
I like credit unions presonally, if you have any in your area. There rates are better, they have better loan programs, and they are friendly to their smaller base of owners.
Hi Justin,
I finally got over here!
Great website!! Will definitely be back. Love the 'About Me' I really like it when people have an honest about me about them selves. :D
Plus you are a capricorn/aquarius. My birthday is the 15th! That explains the drive and spirit you have!
Now to the point of the post. It sounds like banks are the same all over the world! :( They are businesses making money, just like most other businesses. I actually think people forget that and for some reason think banks are above normal business.
I recently read "The conspiracy of the Rich' by Robert Kyosaki. It certainly put the business of banking into perspective.
We all should be shopping around for the best value for our money no matter where we live.
Great Post! See you back here soon!
Cheers
Jacinta :D
I recently went through 2 weeks of hell, having debit card access blocked to my account nightly while on vacation. I spent hours on the phone with Ally and emailed senior executives.
Eventually, the problem was corrected to where I can access the account. The bottom line is:
1. Ally does not have the automation systems in place to function as a bank
2. Ally isn't a bank at all in the since you cannot go to an Ally location and withdraw your money (I was prepared to fly there to get my money)
3. Ally continues to advertise falsely regarding their customer service.
4. Ally will not compensate you for any losses that are their fault. You are on your own, baby.
Don't waste your time with this bank imposter.
