We’ve seen a lot of nasty shit go down the past 2-3 years in this industry. Acai berry wonder pills and make money online offers were two of the lasgest niches hit. With the rebill scheme, our industry got a lot of attention, and not for the better. The government has stepped in, and creditors have stopped charges from some merchants. Offers pop up one day and are gone the next because of this. People made millions and some lost everything.
But over just the past few months, we’ve seen a lot of changes. Lead gens and the return of sale based offers have been huge over many networks. Dating and gaming niches have seen an incredible spike in traffic and offer amounts. People have also gotten into developing more permanent properties and products/services, including myself.
Ad networks have cracked down incredibly tight. Google has always had a tight mouth to feed, but recently others like Facebook and even Myspace have cracked down. I’ve even noticed MediaTraffic and TrafficVance not allowing some campaigns I want to test. What does this mean for you and me?
Well, if you’re lazy – it probably means game over. Go back to your 9-5 office job.
If you’re the smart, passionate worker, though, you’re in luck. The innovaters will be the one to profit in the now. And with all these other guys going back to their jobs, that means you’ve got considerably less competition. Sure, its harder to get that campaign running profitably, but you’ll be paying less for clicks/impressions/views.
With offers becoming more whitehat- it means they’ll probably be generating more money per lead. Harder to convert, but pays out twice as much.
Less money per click + more money per conversion – the fact you’ll have to work a tiny bit harder means you’ll probably be making just the same amount as before if not more. With your increased work ethic, you’ll probably be able to perform better than before, become a more creative thinker, and really be able to tap into the mind of people you are targeting.
Get off your lazy asses, work harder, and be creative.

How the hell are you supposed to generate up to $200 a month in rebills from a gaming lead? Ya obviously auto insurance and other insurances do generate huge amounts of $$$ over the years, but not in such a short amount of time. Plus, your quality does matter a lot to the advertiser. With rebills, they'll take anything as long as they can charge the card. Just saying.
ya its gonna become more difficult and I agree that the smart ones will persist.
I was jumping the gun on this when CNN started running reports on acai in Jan/Feb '09. I think that was a little early, but everybody knew it was coming.
Couldn't agree more about working hard – great post.
Clearly, the development model is superior (and more profitable) over the long term. And yes, as you mentioned that requires hard work along with good (or great) content creation and all the other internet marketing skills/knowledge. Individual competitive advantage also comes into play in a big way. Any profit from arbitrage strategies will continue to shrink to miniscule levels. Better to put in the effort & create an actual business model that will profit over the long term….
Glad the rebill hell is over. The whlole thing gave the title "affiliate marketer" a bad name.
I had friends who new nothing about affiliate marketing telling me i was a scam lol, and I never sold a re-bill offer :/
I did the cheap online gaming offers. I also promoted niche sales, not fat girl pills.
Not enough affiliates focus on sales, only quick money and the only affiliates who I see are getting network awards are affiliates who do NOT do these sales. The big discount sites and established websites like this.
The affiliates who are broke from campaigns were just greedy and that's that. They wanted quick money and more than half are sleezy landing page thieves. The others are using readers to suck off and the rest are not living off the earnings and still work a job.
I need to write more about the bullcrap.
I think most affiliates need to break away from forums and websites and innovate on their own , with trial and error.
Niche sites are the future.
It’s just the death of crap lead gen with crap landing page that don’t tell you what happen after you leave some information (they are very hard to cancel after you join)
"With offers becoming more whitehat" I love this quote … we all know affiliate marketing is a black hate world….. google , facebook and myspace seems to find some affiliate marketer not legit at 100%… just saying
Hey Guys, I started reading a book last night called "what makes them tick". Gave me some new ideas for angles on running new campaigns. Talked a lot about finding out what your audience needs. Not a new concept but more important than ever right now with it being harder to build out profitable campaigns.
