What are the top 3 niches that affiliate marketers are running in?

What niche should I start in? Is one of the most common questions I receive on a daily basis from my forums, emails and blog comments. There is no definitive answer, as what might work for me, might not work for you. However, the 3 biggest affiliate marketing niches that most noobies jump into are as follows: Dating, gaming, and health.

Dating

Dating is a huge niche. We’re born to do, essentially, one thing in life: find a mate. This is your turn to help others do this. Dating is a very accessible niche, yet very competitive. However, there are mini-niches in every single demographic and offer to match them. It also works well across almost any traffic source, especially social. The best way to get at dating is to be on top of new offers (or create your own) and to constantly rotate ads.

Gaming

Everyone needs a little entertainment, and whether at work, school or stuck at home, gaming is a simple choice to ease over a streak of boredom. You can opt for downloadable game affiliate offers, or online MMO game offers. I find the simple toolbar/downloadable game offers do great on Facebook. The key is making sure you are playing correctly with your targeting.

Health

This is a huge niche, and is more a collection of many niches put under this one category. Weight-loss, stop smoking, muscle-gain, and stress are all some examples of niches you can run. And again, like dating, it is very broad. Almost everyone has some health problems that you can target and get at. Find a demographic with a wide spread health related issue and target them for all they’re worth. I’d suggest a landing page with health niches, as many of the offer pages available to you do horrid jobs at preselling.

This year has been full of complete failures, at least the one’s I have had the luck of watching, that have entered the movie theatres. I had my 5 dollar ticket to head into the film ‘Wanted’ expecting nothing much more than what the trailer had pumped me up with. I hadn’t even read a synopsis of the film. I’ll spare you the trouble by providing you with one:

“Wanted” tells the tale of one apathetic nobody’s transformation into an unparalleled enforcer of justice. In 2008, we’re introduced to a hero for a new generation: 25 year old employed slacker, Wesley Gibson. Wes is the most disaffected, cube-dwelling, clock-punching drone this planet has ever known. His boss chews him out hourly, his girlfriend ignores him routinely, and his life plods on in interminable boredom and routine. Everyone knows this disengaged slacker will amount to absolutely nothing, and so does he, until he meets the sexy, foxy woman named FOX, and then everything changes.

Wes’ estranged father is murdered, and the deadly Fox recruits him into The Fraternity, a secret society that trains him to avenge his father’s death, by unlocking his dormant powers. And oh boy does he have powers, as she teaches Wes how to develop his lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, he discovers that The Fraternity lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: to carry out the death orders given by emotionless Fate itself.

Wes, with his wickedly brilliant and sexy tutor, plus the paternal guidance of The Fraternity’s enigmatic leader, Sloan, young Wes grows to enjoy all the strength and success he ever wanted. But, slowly, he realizes there’s more to his dangerous associates than meets the casual eye. And, as he wavers between new found heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one can ever teach him; that he alone controls his destiny. Provided by Orange.

Timur Bekmambetov, who is responsible for ‘Night Watch’ and ‘Day Watch’, put together this ultraviolet piece, and he did it with some excellent style. It is a grisly film, prevalently filled to the brim with “F”-bombs, blood, and with some filtered comedy, as well.

Wesley Gibson, played by James McAvoy, puts on quite a show for the audience. Starting out as an account manager overwhelmed by stress from his obnoxious and over-sized boss, the fact that his girlfriend is cheating on him with his best friend, and because he is unable to stand up to anyone, we eventually see this slacker evolve into a new man.

The change brought up in Wes manifests when a new woman enters his life. Fox, none other than Angelina Jolie’s sexy character, finds Wesley in the grocery store and a shoot and chase scene breaks out. It turns into a mash-up of the Matrix, Kill Bill, and Chinese martial arts films, mixed in with a bit of The Fast and The Furious. If you are looking for an exciting film, this film fails to bore.

The story is absolutely ridiculous. Don’t see ‘Wanted’ if you expect a story that can at least attest for itself upon questioning. There were so many holes in the “fabric” of this story that I couldn’t help but laugh afterward. The Fraternity gets it’s orders from a loom named “The Loom of Fate.” It spits out names in binary code, which was actually invented 1000 years ago if this story could hold true. The unfortunate nature of this factor was probably the biggest disappointment of the film. I’m assuming this film had a budget of well over $100-million, and they couldn’t even hire a creative director imaginative enough to think of something, perhaps, more genuine?

I’m not shunning the film on many other points though. It was exciting, it did it’s job to give me $5 worth of entertainment, and I wanted more of the action. I’m not sure if we will see a sequel to this, but I’d be glad to have it happen. Pump it with all the adrenaline this action story is packed with, and it will be set for many more millions of dollars.

“Wanted” is an action flick feeding those dying from the summer heat. It provides on that level, and that level only. Based on a 5-star ranking, I’ll pass out a 3.75 star rank. It gave me plenty of pump but lacked the story I like to see in films. I would have given a 3.5 ranking if it weren’t for Angelina Jolie’s butt shot. Glorious.

Staying organized is tough for a guy that works full time out of his single room apartment. Luckily, I live off my computer and I?m not hampered by the other things that get in the way of making my room messy (ex. Collectables, television, posters, excessive amounts of clothing and a girlfriend are all things I don?t let mess up my room). I sweep it every few days, but I barely have to. The room stays clean by me avoiding every dirty thing in the book. There?s no kitchen to cook with here, so I just eat out every day; snacks are kept away from the office (corner of the room with desk and computer) and eaten on the porch.

However, getting that act together with my freelance writing profession isn?t quite that simple. There are so many programs and tasks that can be linked, that I lose track of everything. It?s worse than writing that bad clients project about crayfish mating in the matter that it makes my head want to explode. I have to get together emails, names, writing project details, IM screen names, websites, research material, to-dos, urgent to-dos that need to be done today, payment deals, and then I have to balance my time and personal life into that equation. It?d be hard to say that I?m not left without a headache after my digital cleaning is done.

When?s the best time to start cleaning? When you aren?t doing anything else, and have nothing else to do. Today, the skies have bestowed Bangkok with rain, again; my Internet connection has refused to connect, again; my room, as I mentioned earlier, is the dream-world of boredom. I was planning on working on some of my freelance writing projects, but without the access to proper research materials online, I decided it would be time to get organized.

I filled in a ton of clients to my freelance writing client?s list. Yesterday, I told you about how I use email to get old clients to come back to me. Later today, I will use that list to write a mother load of emails and queue them to be sent when my connection decides it wants to appreciate the 13 dollars I put towards it every month (It?s the only available connection at my apartment).

Today, I also filled in my freelance writing queue Excel spreadsheet, as well. It lists what projects I?m working on, who it?s for, what it?s about, how much I?m getting paid for it, and when I have to finish it. Excel lets you manage this in a simple, customizable fashion. I?ve heard Google has the same type of software available online, but what do you know, I?m not really available to get online today (that?s a problem I see. There are too many freelancers basing their project work online, without ways to back it up offline.

When this was complete, I emptied out the thousands of messages in my inbox, created separate folders for all of my clients? emails, and sorted them through. This is an excellent way to keep a track of your conversations in a message-by-message format without breaking them with other?s emails.

That took care of most of my digital spring cleaning, and it only took about an hour?s time. I expect it to actually save me a few more hours in the not so far away. With the emails written, I plan to gain a few more projects and make a lot more money within the coming days, and I?ll need it! Tuition for my next term of college is due tomorrow. Hope they accept credit cards!

Recently, I found myself in quite the mess. I had been down as many of my clients seemed to, not abandon me, yet, just didn’t seem to have any work that needing completing. My freelance writing income came to a dead stand still, and after some expensive weekends I was finding my wallet left without much to draw.

I decided that now would be the time to go out and look for some new clients. Normally, when my work comes to a standstill like this, I head to forums and post the type of writing I can do, as well as listing a price well below the normal project fees I prefer to work for. Generally, the work on these forums is quite easy, so the time saved from lighter research generally makes up for the absence of higher project costs.

Despite listing what I enjoy writing, I get all sorts of offers on other niches people need articles written for. One of the first projects thrown at me after waiting a few hours for a response is something I absolute dread writing on. The project was worth a lot of money though, and I need that. I emailed the client back saying I’d take it.

I got to work. Two hours later, I was only 500 words in on a 5000 word project. This isn’t my typical magazine article or heavily researched sales copy that I need to write. This is a niche article for a blog with light SEO work applied. Why is it taking me so long to do this? The problem lies in that I hate writing on this niche.

It’s a boring niche. There are hundreds of articles on this niche already, so making anything new and exciting on it is a nearly impossible task. I hate the subject matter and the blandness of it all. It’s like toilet-fodder to me.

This 1 day project took me 3 days. It was a lot of forcing myself. I had to play games to keep my mind focused on writing these ‘damn’ articles instead of popping open Call of Duty 4 (excellent game, by the way). I should have been able to do this? within 5 hours, yet instead, I sat confounded in the depths of my own boredom trudging away, key by key, the words… the 5000 words that felt like 5 million… on a topic I just despise.

My lesson to myself: Don’t take freelance writing projects you can’t stand. It is pointless. An hour after I picked up this project, I got another one on a niche that I practically live off. I actually finished it in between the project I hated. While getting paid in the end was nice, I wanted to punch myself in the face for doing something so ignorant. Next time someone wants that niche written, I’m charging 3 times my normal rate.

A better choice would just be not to write on it ever again. And I don’t think I will. Follow suit.
