Someone in the private forums requested I post about having employees, so I’ll write a series of posts about my experience with my employees.
I want to go over a list of pros and cons about having employees, so let’s not waste time and just get to it!
Pros
- Getting Tasks Done – You pay your employees to get shit done. They know the job when you sign them on (if you’re a good manager), and even if its the most boring crap you could think to make a job for, if they don’t do it, you just pay someone else to do it! You can also hire people to do things you don’t know how to do. Keep yourself doing the thinking, give tasks you don’t want to do, don’t have enough time for, or can’t do it yourself to your employees.
- Teamwork – Affiliate marketing can be a lonely job, sometimes. I did it alone for about 2 years before I hired my first employee to work in my office. Let’s just say my social skills went down the crapper. They were never that good (if you met me at ASW, you might agree. I’m pretty shy). With a couple employees on my team now, we can chat a bit, talk about whats going down in BKK and just have someone to talk to.
- Extra Thinking – When you give your employees time to think about what they are doing, they can get pretty creative and give you some help with your own goals. The new guy I hired came from a more offline marketing background, and he has some great ideas to expand my business online, and eventually take it offline.
- Ability to work at home – Since most of our work is done on PCs and the Internet, if you are sick or just feeling like you need a personal day, you can let your employees work from home. Last Friday, I did this myself to keep some stress off me when I launched the forums.
Cons
Got any pros or cons with your employees? Let them be known in the comments below or the forums!
Having employees if you are *only* doing affiliate marketing is extremely tricky. From my experiences, its often much harder teaching them what to do rather than just doing it yourself. The learning curve is steep, and when they do finally understand what is going on, they think its really easy, go off on their own and think they can replicate exactly what you do. Unfortunately, they forget that one of the most important aspects of affiliate marketing is the seed funding and a healthy disregard for money when testing.
Point being, I found my success if the person brings something to the table that I can't (designer, programmer, etc). This way, you stick to what your good at and keep the training to a minimum.
Hey justin
Great post great pros and cons im starting to spend way to much time on the computer have to watch that lol really enjoyed reading this post
Thanks
Davy
lots of pros for employees for me.
#1. pretty much set a system into play, where in if you're good with systems it can pretty much sustain itself, after you plug in the right employee for each task at hand.
#2. expansion– expanding would be very easy to do. you just keep adding employees, assuming you know your numbers and business and your income increases exponentially.
#3. covering your weaknesses– putting in the right people, can really cover alot of your weaknesses, especially if you have tons like me. You can get the right people in, of course in due time.
I can go on and on. but having my own set of employees has really taken my business to a different level.
Justin,
I just started a blogging website and can do everything on my own for now. When is the best time to hire someone to help me out?

A major con is the not showing up sick days. i hate it when people always want off or just dont show up somtimes its just easier to do things yourself and forget the employees.
Those cons have never been an issue for me. I tend to keep business on the business side of things. But people with friendly personalities would definitely have that issue.
I think one of the most difficult parts is how you do still have this sense that if a method turns out positive, you never quite know if someone will run off with it.
You have to build a lot of trust amongst each other.
Likewise, if you're managing others, everyone should still get their say and perhaps even work on small side projects :)
Great info Justin!
Personally, I think having employees is a terrible idea when it comes to Affiliate Marketing. There is just so much room for something to go wrong. Haha

Hi Justin,
I laughed at the "steal your shit" and make a business from your business, never really thought about that, I guess I am too trusting!
But it's such a valid point, will keep that one in mind, Sally :)
Justin,
After running an offline business for almost 25 years, I know a bit about hired personnel. Many times, I had this sense of responsibility toward them in that they depended on me to make sure they had work.
Other times, the day you needed them the most, that's the day they chose to be "sick". I got to where I hated to hear the phone ring.
There are pros and cons to having employees but the most unbalanced portion I had to deal with was trying to be a friend to them and a boss at the same time. That was difficult for all of us I think.
Good thoughts.
Later,
Mike
All interesting points. I know that when I actually had a "real job" it would always piss me off when I'd see other employees get buddy buddy with the boss and stop producing. Douche bag grunts need to be put in their place sometimes.
