Making Money Off Death

Posted on June 21st, 2011 By Under Affiliate Marketing

We recently lost one of the boys from TV-show and movie series ‘Jackass’, Ryan Dunn. I always enjoyed watching the shows, and its always sad when you hear about decent people passing away, but you probably aren’t reading my blog to grief. If you’re one of the guys that doesn’t mind roaming through a bit of unethical territory, read on. If you’re someone that gets pissed off when someone tries to benefit from tragedy, you should probably quit reading before you want to punch my face off.

So, if you haven’t gotten around to reading the news, Ryan Dunn went out, had a few drinks, and was on his way home driving his Porsche with a buddy riding shotgun. Whether he was speeding or too drunk to drive or whatever the circumstance might be, he drove off the rode and his car went ablaze, killing Ryan and his still to be identified passenger. The fire was so bad, Ryan could only be identified by his tattoos.

Jackass has a decent following,  so we’ve got a lot of people we can target. The key to making money with this is being fast before the news of Ryan’s death subsides. The tactic I’m going to explain here is in no way new, but it is tried and proven to work.

Anyways, much of the controversy here is whether or not Ryan was drunk/speeding. Let’s use it. Start off by building a very simple landing page.

“Was Ryan Dunn Drunk/Speeding When He Crashed His Car? Vote Now To Win a Free XYZ!”

Obviously, we’re building a poll style landing page. Whether or not it is functional or not doesn’t matter. These are very simple landing pages to build, and if you don’t have the basic HTML knowledge to build an LP like this, it is time you get on your work horse and spend a day to study it. You’ll need it and want the skills even if someday you have a team of 5 in-house designers doing all your biddings.

The FREE XYZ is a simple zip-submit or email submit style offer. For more money making opportunities here, you can collect the email on your poll landing page, then prepop it onto the offer page. You’ll want to do a little research here on what will be hot for the demographic you are targeting, but it is safe to assume many people that will answer this poll are middle-class, maybe younger adults in their early twenties. An email submit offer for a free game system or gift card at Best Buy will do.

So after someone submits their answer, I would redirect them to a 2nd page that says something like “Thanks for you answer. 47% of all asked agreed with you. You will be redirected to another page to collect your FREE XYZ in 5 seconds.” Then auto-redirect them to your offer and include a link on the page, just in case.

Where can you promote this? Well, I haven’t used this method for a long, long time, so I’ll be honest, I’m not sure who is going to allow this and who isn’t. Pretty sure Google will give you a hard time with it, but you might have some success on AdCenter. Finding keywords here shouldn’t be too difficult. Just go to Google, type in Ryan Dunn and add all the keywords that pop up. Jackass related keywords will work, as well.

You shouldn’t have much trouble with PPV traffic here. If one traffic source doesn’t allow it, others surely will. You can target news sites, twitter pages and status updates, Facebook pages, along with all pages and keywords related to Ryan Dunn and the show/movie, Jackass. Targeting sites like MTV and celebrity gossip sites might work, as well. Again, the key here is to build fast and take as much of the traffic as you can because this is not a unique affiliate tactic and others will probably already be doing just this.

Feel free to rage at my lack of compassion for loss of life and willingness to find some personal benefit from it in the comments below.</sarcasm>

The important thing about this strategy is to to get on it as early as possible, as CPC/CPV costs will go through the roof within 24-48 hours on a trending topic like this. Good money to be made though.

While we're being spammy, make sure you're not missing out on Twitter trending topics with this idea. Note that there are separate TT's for many regions outside the U.S. as well.

    Twitter bots are your friends.

    Hey Justin,

It is a gruesome thought, to profit off of someones death, but you know others will be doing it, so why not, right.

You have laid out a pretty good plan to do this type of thing. Of course it's probably to late for me now.

Guess I'll have to wait until the next celebrity dies. Probably not the best thing to say, but it is bound to happen, so why not make some money off it.

Thanks for sharing on such a controversial topic.

Interesting read and something I had never considered before.

I agree with Ian. Why not make some money from it, others will be. There are usually jokes out about a celebrity within minutes after their death (it was 5 minutes after Michael Jackson died before I got a text with a joke about it!)

Suppose its just a matter of getting in quick and not being too tasteless.
