How To Write a Dating Ad

Posted on September 12th, 2010 By Under Facebook

Dating used to be an easy niche in the affiliate space. 10 cent clicks on Facebook were simple to get with a busty women and “Single, Lonely and Looking” as your ad headline. The good old days indeed.

The dating space isn’t dead, but it isn’t the easy money-tree it used to be. There are no true secrets here, and chances are if you make a male profile, 30 years or older and set his status as single and interested in women, you can probably learn a thing or two about what other marketers are doing. And there is a very good likely hood that you’ll learn more from that then you will from me blogging about it. Oh well… you asked; I provide.

Now I’m going to ramble about Facebook traffic here. I like it more for dating that PoF, despite the leniency of PoF on their ad guidelines. They just don’t have the traffic and ads die out after a couple days. If you’ve got a team working around the clock here, that’s fine, because you’ll need new images and ads almost everyday to keep campaigns alive. That isn’t my cup of tea.

Of course, take a look over the FB Ad Guidelines. You don’t have to break the rules to make a successful campaign here. You can bend them, but don’t break them unless you want to say goodbye to your account. One of my favorite rules to bend is the user data in the ad rule (ex. You can’t say the ad is “for singles 30 and up” unless your offer is a 30 and up only dating site).

A couple ways to get around that little rule are to find an offer that works so you can include user data in the ad (30 Plus Singles.com or something like that), or you can make a landing page. Despite what you think, landing pages and dating work well together.

So, I’m gonna set up a landing page. It makes it easier for me to write an ad I want to write. If I want to write an ad about 35 year old black women from Oakland, CA, I can do that by including all that data on my landing page. (Although, even with this, it can be really hit an miss, especially with an exact age in the ad).

With that all said and done, it’s down to me to think up 2 ad headlines and bodies, and split test from there. I’ll always rotate two different ads with my best performing images. A simple change in 2 words has incresed my EPC sometimes by as much as 10 – 20 cents on a typical dating offer.

As for actually writing the ad, you don’t need to think about it to hard. Use common sense and give what your audience wants. Young guys want sex and casual dating. All women want a real relationship. Older guys are looking for a woman to tell them how great they look and make them a sandwich. Alright, maybe I’m overgeneralizing here (and coming off like a major arse. News: I am.)

A sample ad for you guys that I’m using now:

“Real Men for Real Dating – Meet real men in X-City looking to start a real relationship with women like you. Create your free profile on xdatingsite.com now!”

Is it the best performer? Nope, not by a long shot, but it works and it converts because I’ve got the users interest and I give them all the details they need for me to get my conversion with that last call to action. This is just a basic ad that I will build off of, going deeper in and seeing how far I can bend the rules with until Facebook says no more.

    And nice post bro!

but aren't you targetting way too tight?

    black women 35 in CA.

how are you supposed to target people by ethnicity anyway?

The only way i can think of is by targetting one of their cultural niches.

    (e.g – lilwayne etc)

and if you target that tight. wouldn't your demo size be like 1k??

I know it will get good CTR, but i'm just wondering if this campaign would have a good life span.

    Cheers mate!

That's good advice. I've tried the same lander strategy, but every time the ad was denied. The lander content matched the ad copy almost exactly and everything else was up to par with fb guidelines.

It looked like they clicked through my lander and checked the offer page as well, which was a very generic dating offer. I presume the actual offer being "non-targeted" to the user data mentioned in the ad copy is what fb did not like.

Is that why you say it's hit or miss?

There was no opt-in on my landers, which could deter fb ad reviewers from click-through to offer page… Have to try it with an email opt-in on the lander.

  9. Hi Justin,

Thanks for the visit and comment on my blog.

You certainly know the rules for posting with facebook…I am surprised to read that the dating niche does not get as good a response.

Recently read a post where this IM guru had tested the facebook adverts and concluded that it was not a great area for IM adverts.

    Good to meet you.

    Cheers

    Bryan
