How to Pick a Demographic and Wrap an Offer Around It

Posted by Justin Dupre on November 7th, 2008

I’m sitting in my management class right now. This seems like a good time to try and type out a whole blog post on my Blackberry. With this post I wanted to help you find demographics and structure an offer around that audience.

If you are new to marketing, you probably don’t have enough data about different groups of people that might be interested in offers that you could serve them. So, you should probably pick something you know really well. Where do you live, what do your best friends like to do in their free time, what kind of offers would they find some value in investing in, and how could you go about targeting these people.

Let’s work through these problems with an example:

Well, being in Thailand, I guess I would know Thai people pretty well. But Thai people is a huge demographic - about 60 million people ranging from monks to high class hotties to low class slum slingers and even twelve year old schoolboys - my favorite! I want to gather more data on one group that I’m somewhat familiar with, though. The “gratuey” - better known as a Thai ladyboy (uber’s favorite).

What I know about Thai ladyboys is that they want to be exactly like women, and ages of wannabe chicks range from around 18 to 40. So really, it’s almost like I would be targeting women of these demographics. Simple simple.

Most women want weight loss, so it might seem like a good choice to throw up beckysweightloss.com and get a targeted campaign going up. Most thais are already skinny as pencils, though, so I probably wouldn’t see much profit from targeting that kind of demographic. Instead we still need to think about other things women want: tits, men, beauty.

Titties: there has got to be some kind of breast enlargement drug you could push. Alternatively, I could walk up to prestigious plastic surgeons and ask if they’d like to potentially increase the amount of surgeries they run. I could then gather data myself and sell leads to these doctors myself for a few hundred dollars each (besides mailing, selling leads directly is probably the most profitable type of marketing you could do.

Love: lady boys like men… Mostly either rich men or whitties like me (Eek!). There are plenty of dating sites I could get them to sign up with. However, they probably wouldn’t pay for any subscription, which in that case I’d be better off creating my own dating site, letting ladyboys sign up for free, and then target idiot foreign men in adwords or facebook and get them to sign up and pay to contact the ladyboys. This takes a little more work, but now that I’ve typed this I can see how profitable this could actually be if I did this. Eww…

Beauty: Thai people don’t have the idea that beauty can be found on the inside but who actually does think like that. The whiter you are in Thailand, the more sexy you are (making me the sexiest man in the country with my reflective, pasty whiteness). Skin whitening products are readily available, and throwing out a free trial offer would probably convert well after testing. Clothes and other types of make-up probably wouldn’t work as well though, because it’s already dirt cheap already.

Trust me, I’m no expert on ladyboys but you learn enough about them being in Thailand and trying your best to avoid them. If there were any offers available for Thai people, I’d put these to the test, but they’re hard to come by except for the low paying dating offers. This should give you an idea on how stupid simple it is to throw together what you know and make some kind of campaign of it.
