Jumping into Cost Per View traffic was a weird transition. I thought, hell, I’ve done good with social media traffic and some small media buys, how hard could PPV be? I was wrong. I went in at it all the wrong way. Made a lot of mistates that I wish I didn’t make and I lost a lot of money. To help you guys avoid those mistakes I made, check out my list below.
1. Never scale a campaign that isn’t profitable. This one is a hurr-durr moment, but I did it! I was breaking almost even, not quite, but almost on my first campaign. I thought I had the wrong targets, so rather than knock some targets out, I decided to add 5000 more. Yeah… don’t ask me what I was thinking. Add this to the list of dumb moments in affiliate marketing history.
2. On another note, don’t add 5000 targets to one campaign. Wayyyy too hard to track and it will be very expensive to get any real data from it. If you got the money to blow, go for it, but it will take a while to figure out where you are getting your converting traffic from.
3. Don’t be afraid of small campaigns. I wanted at least 200 – 300 dollars a day from each campaign I made. Finding them, though, wasn’t always easy. However, I did find it pretty simple to get campaigns that made me 10 – 20 dollars per day and do so consistently for months at a time. Most of the time they take 15 – 1 hour to build out, take little to no optimization if you know what you’re doing, and then at the end of the month you are left with 300 – $600 more than you started with. Build out 10 of these and you’re golden.
4. Split test everyway you can. I used to just direct link everything. I was running one campaign when my affiliate manager asked me why my epc’s were so low on the campaign. It’s PPV traffic of course, but he already knew that. He told me he was running the same campaign internally, but using landing pages. I was running it at 100% ROI so I thought I was all good, but when he told me he was getting 5 times that it kinda told me I had to start trying some new tactics. Most of my campaigns now split test direct linking to the cpa offer and at least 2-3 different landing pages.
And last of all, don’t be afraid to use a good toolset. It will make all the difference in how fast and easy it is to set up everything. Get Prosper202 setup on a nice dedicated server. Get that server optimized and use it only for your PPV traffic. Get a seperate one for your landers. And use AffPortal if you don’t know how to scrape. It really is the shit!

Couldn't agree more about wanting to have large campaigns, but sometimes the best ones are the smaller ones that require little-no optimization along the way and just bank you money. Thanks for the tips, I'm starting to learn PPV traffic and this helps!
I would add rotating offers to split testing your campaigns. I've found that helps quite a bit to ultimately coming up with a successful PPV campaign.
Would you say it is a must for Prosper202 to be on a dedicated server? Might be a rhetorical question but just wanted to find the reason behind why a dedicated server as opposed to a shared or VPS.
Also, Make sure to never check your affiliate links or tracking links. Just trust that your AM will tell you if something is down or that your host company always is monitoring your MYsql. :)
Great tips Justin. What are you using for a rotator to split test directs and LP's? P202 has one, but you cant tell which offer is performing better or offers from different networks easily. Let alone mix DL and LP
What's your solution to this ?
Thanks

Nice referral links, fag.
If you don't want to use a referral link:
http://www.wiredtree.com
And
http://www.affportal.com
Both are auto-converted to links via a plugin in WordPress. If you don't like my monetization methods or my blog, you certainly aren't required to read any of it.
Go back to making money, bro.
Before now, I have NEVER seen a blog about making money on the internet that had affiliate links.
You're suppose to share your knowledge completely for free, doncha know. ;)
Good post! I appreciate you sharing the ups and downs of your experience with PPV.
It sounds like getting lots of ~$20 trickles may be a very viable way to go… and those targets may have less competition than the prime KWs and urls as well (which is something PPV has seen a lot of over the past year).
idea for your marketplace – resell dedi or vps hosting accounts with a pre-configured p202 install ready for ppv. it's not hard to install, but its not fun either, and does take some time.
p202 should be included with fantastico or other hosting script installer, but its not.
question about list building with PPV…I'm trying to build a dating list (of males)….and have a simple landing page with a explicit CTA as you mentioned to fill out name and email for a free seduction guide…..
However, I get minimal signups……I'm convinced my landers are fine (I've tested multiple), but my URL targets are the problem. What type of URLs do you suggest I target?
I find it hilarious that there are still people out there giving other people shit for using affiliate links on your own blogs. LOL! What's wrong with monetizing your own blog?? Normal people out there would WANT Justin to make money from telling us about Affportal. Haters, on the other hand, are just jealous losers.
The sooner you haters start taking this business seriously, the sooner you'll make your first sale.
Hey Bro, I have a dedicated server, but Prosper is still boggin down with running reports and also when I get a lot of traffic, 50k impressions a day.
What are some tips to optimize my Dedi or some things to tell my host to get it to run better?
Thanks man, lovin your content!
Hey Justin,
was wondering when your talking about smaller campaigns, how many URL targets could that mean…like 20-50? Also…i have a campaign that i've been told by my AM that a LP isn't required nor useful since the offer type…But i'm wondering, how can i optimize my targets? should i remove all the ones that gave me views but no conversions after a few days or leave them there? And do i had new targets?
Cause as of right now, i've noticed that most days where i've made a couple sales, it was with the same URL target…So why not do a new campaign with only one target(the converting one) i would ask?!:P lol but actually, it's quite strange…on some days, that target only needs less than 100 views to give 1-2 conversions, but on other days like today, have over 200 views and nada…:S
Anyways got some good tips pls?!
tks!
Hi Justin,
Thank goodness I came across your blog. Seeing as I am somewhat of a noob I was hoping for something like this. Just a couple questions. What if I'm basically dirt poor because my husband refuses to work for anyone but himself but sucks at it, and I can't yet invest in something like wired tree, which you obviously recommend. Is that vital to your success?
Could I be successful buying a few LP's from you and just hosting them with something like HostGator? I just need to know a decent place for hosting and domain names. How does one go about hosting a Landing Page? Is it different than hosting a website?
I'm with DirectCPV right now and as I understand it, they use interstitials rather than the standard pop up size, so I would need to buy regular size LP's from you, right?
I'm already embarassed at my noobishness. I know this long post might warrant a consulting fee. Sorry about that. Answer if you feel generous. Thanks!
